    Preliminary information

How to tame a dog in Minecraft

Su Minecraft There are a variety of animals and creatures available, some of which can be tamed for company on their adventures, or to raise them in their own shelter. If you want to tame a dog, however, know that unfortunately this animal is not available in the official version of the game.

As a replacement for the dog, if you don't want to use Mods, you can tame a wolf in minecraft which, in general, can be considered a valid alternative to this animal. In fact, you can go exploring in the wake of your trusty wolf, who will defend you in case of attacks from enemies.

Alternatively, if you prefer to use a Mod that can give you more choice on the type of dog to take with you in Minecraft, you can rely on the free mod More Dogs, available only for Minecraft Java Edition for PC, or on the paid mod Pets: Dogs available for Minecraft Bedrock Edition (the version of the game for Windows 10, consoles and mobile devices).

If you want to know more about how to install mods on Minecraft, you can consult my guide dedicated to the topic.

Made the necessary premises above, if you want to know how to tame a dog in minecraft without the Mods (so bringing a wolf and not a dog with you), follow the instructions below. The instructions, however, may also be valid in the case of Mod with dogs.

    Resources needed

How to tame a dog in Minecraft

First of all, to proceed with taming a wolf in Minecraft, it is important to have all the necessary resources with you. You must know, in fact, that wolves are creatures that live in the wild and, therefore, you must be able to build a relationship of trust with them, so that you can tame them.

To do this, you need several units of Osso that you will have to feed these animals. To recover this resource, you can simply defeat the skeletal creatures or you can try to recover them in the trunks scattered around the world of Minecraft. In addition, through fishing you have a chance, albeit minimal, to get a bone as a reward.

Other than this resource, you don't need anything else to be able to tame a wolf. Therefore, if you have everything that I have indicated in the previous paragraphs with you, all you have to do is continue with the reading of the next chapters.

    Taming a wolf

Wolves are animals you can't find in any Minecraft biome. If you are looking for at least one to tame it, my advice is to visit very specific areas, such as forest taiga taiga of giant trees and snowy taiga.

In these biomes you can usually find a wolf pack consisting of at least three individuals, of which there may also be a cub. Wolves do not generally attack the player, but when threatened they immediately become aggressive.

You can easily recognize a wolf by its typical dog-like shape, with a gray coat. In case the wolf is aggressive towards your avatar, you may notice red eyes. In this case, all you can do is defeat the creature and go in search of another wolf.

When facing the wolf to tame, equip a block of Osso (at least 3 units). Afterward, you need to approach the wolf and interact on it with the bone in your hand, so that it can feed on it. Whenever you interact with a wolf, you have a one in three chance that you will be successful in taming it.

My advice is to continue feeding it, until you see that the wolf changes its appearance: in fact, if you have successfully performed the procedure I described in the previous paragraph, the wolf will have a red collar and it will set in "sitting" position.

When the wolf is sitting, it will not follow your avatar, remaining exactly in the position where you left it. If your avatar is attacked, the wolf will defend you until the hostile creature is defeated. In this case, at the end of the fight, the wolf will return to its previous position, waiting for a command.

By interacting with the wolf, it is possible to pass from the "sitting" to the "standing" position and vice versa. In the latter mode, the wolf will follow your avatar to any place, even those that are difficult to reach, teleporting to his side.

    Taking care of the wolf

How to tame a dog in Minecraft

Now that you've tamed a wolf, let's see together how you should take care of it. First of all, in case you have to reach a very dangerous place for which you do not want the wolf to be present, be careful to leave it in the shelter by setting it in the "sitting" position, so that it cannot follow you in any way.

You can also make a leash (as I explained to you in my guide on the subject) to use it on the wolf: in this way, after having tied it to a fence, the animal will not follow you or defend you in case of attacks.

If your wolf takes damage, you can feed it to recover its hit points. You can use any type of cooked, raw or rotten food (meat or fish) to feed a wolf. Each food, however, allows you to recharge a variable number of hit points.
